Martin Margiela, born the 9th April 1957 in Genk is a Belgian fashion designer. He
graduated at Antwerp's Royal Academy of Fine Arts where he studied with the
legendary Antwerp Six, a group of avantgarde fashion designers formed by Ann Demeulemeester,
Dries Van Noten, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, Marina Yee and Walter Van Beirendonck and
where he was considered by many the 7th part of this collective.
Between 1985 and 1987 he worked with Jean Paul Gaultier and in 1989 he presents his first
collection under his own name. Between 1997 and 2003 he became the creative director of
Hermès women's line.
Maison Martin Margiela was acquired by Diesel brand in 2002. After the press pointed out some
successors such as Raf Simons and Haider Ackermann in october 2009 Renzo Rosso finally came
out for some explanations: ''Martin has not been there for a long time. He is here but not here.
We have a new fresh design team on board. We are focusing on young, realistic energy for the
future; this is really Margiela for the year 2015.''.
Later on a press release announced that ''has left the business. No replacement creative director
will be appointed. Maison Martin Margiela will continue trading but the company declined
to comment on the reasons for Margiela’s exit''.
Another genius that left the fashion world? We just hope at least the spirit of
Maison Martin Margiela will be kept by any design team or successor for long long years.
